ERP Evolution from 1913 until present
ERP Evolution start in 1913, It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularized in the 1960s with the release of Letterset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
History of the ERP – The ERP Evolution:
The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English.
Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humor and the like).
If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet.
It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable.
ERP Evolution and the rise of the internet:
With the availability of Internet, more software features appeared. Business needs also increased. The huge use of ERP, and the huge number of transactions besides the availability of internet triggered the need of hardware to support transactions. More needs arise, with the availability of smart phones. Businesses started to own huge numbers of servers. To keep these servers running, demand for power increased. The ventilation and cooling systems for servers became essential to keep the servers cool, and to store the huge quantity of data. Bigger companies started to consume more number of servers.
With more use of power and the increasing need of a green world, businesses and information technology providers went to think for alternatives, to reduce power use and to reduce carbon emissions.
ERP Evolution and The Cloud ERA:
1999, IT historians, claims that Sales force were pioneering the use of cloud computing, offering downloadable versions software to its clients through internet.
2006, Amazon and Google launched two famous services. Amazon Web services targeted to serve companies, websites and individuals.
They provided a variety of cloud services, such as online storage services.
The Cloud ERA

And for the first time, several users in several locations owning excel, could successfully update the same excel sheet online.
2007, witnessed a coalition between IBM, Google and several universities such as MIT, Stanford and others to develop fast processors, treating huge amount of data in a cost efficient way with low carbon emission. Which also served the cloud industry.
Same year, NETFLIX launched its cloud based famous services, coining the concept of the Binge Watching.
2008, a company called Eucalyptus, introduced the concept of owning private cloud. Same year, the famous NASA launched OpenNebula. The platform offered public and private cloud services to individuals and businesses, keeping a bunch of cloud services exclusive for corporate needs.
2010, beside Google, Microsoft efforts, a company called OpenStack offered the first open source cloud to the public. And they even made it easy to use promoting the concept of (do it yourself cloud). The cool concept and the cloud itself became very trendy and not exclusive to big companies.
Cloud ERA and Apple Cloud:
2011, Apple launched ICloud, where anyone can have his own cloud space for his own music, photos or videos. And users can download or upload from anywhere on earth. Same year, Microsoft started a huge awareness campaign, promoting the concept of Cloud, highlighting the great accessibility, mobility of the cloud. Microsoft used all communication channels, such as TV ads, magazines, billboards and all advertising channels to make common people aware of the cloud. And they succeeded.
Cloud ERA and Apple Cloud:
2012, Oracle started huge campaigns promoting the concept of Software as a service (SAAS), Platforms as a service (PAAS), Infrastructure as a service (IAAS), and they added database as a service (DAAS), because of the huge relation between Oracle and the database.
ERP Evolution, from on premise to Cloud:
ERP can still operate on premise (using local servers at customer site), but with the Cloud era, all vendors selling ERP systems pushed their customers to the Cloud. Oracle, SAP, Microsoft beside other ERP vendors, provided incentives to their customers to move their ERP from on Premise to Cloud.
When customers use ERP through the cloud, the software delivered to the customer as a fully supported service. The ERP Cloud vendor is patching, updating and even managing the ERP application for the customer. Besides, the customer do not need to own a huge server room anymore. Cloud is now reducing the operational costs and capital expenses for the customer. Companies can use these resources elsewhere. Information Technology personal can now use their time for their own growth or for exploring more business opportunities for their organizations, which is something of more value than spending their time in front of a screen.
